Triple Fun That Way

Stumbling upon a Peter, Paul, and Mary retrospective on PBS last night, my friends and I got to talking about childhood memories- specifically TV. We then spent a block of time on YouTube watching Lowercase N and Capitol I, as well as the sure to be new classics of the Muppet Bohemian Rhapsody and Ode to Joy by the symphony of Beakers. While my fondest memory of Peter, Paul, and Mary definitely stems from the bootleg copy my dad made of Puff the Magic Dragon, I was disturbed by what the Quarterlifers of tomorrow might associate them with. In Britney Spear’s newest song, “3″, the poetry of the chorus reads: “1, 2, 3 / Peter, Paul & Mary /Gettin’ down with 3p.”
My love for Britney is fairly well documented, but I find it a little more than disturbing that she would use such a powerhouse of awesome as PP&M in a song about threesomes. Was there really no better rhyme with “three”?
Each generation has it’s own childhood references that the previous generations just don’t understand. Some parents didn’t get the Teletubbies, some don’t get Yo Gabba Gabba. Let’s make sure our future generations at least realize that “Blowin’ in the Wind” discussed war, peace, and freedom….and nothing else.
